Problem of the Week #3: The Snail Problem

Snappy the snail is climbing a slippery 30-inch wall. Each minute he climbs up 5 inches and then slips back 4 inches. How long does it take Snappy to climb the wall?

It will take him 30 min. Each minute he climbs 5 then falls 4. So he winds up clibming 1 inch a minute. It will take him 30 inches

I tried using a number line and at the 4th minute I figured out the pattern. So it takes Snappy 30 minutes to climb the wall because he only gains 1 inch per minute

well if snappy climbs up 5 and falls down 4 then basically he is climbing up 1 inch per minute so if it is a 30 inch wall then it will take 30 minutes
p.s you spelled remember wrong

he climbs 5 inches but then falls 4 so actually only climbing 1 inch..so really only climbing one inch a minute which means 30 minutes to climb the wall.

he gains an inch per minute so 30 inches is equal to 30 minutes

Snappy climbs up 5in and then falls back 4in. so each minute he's only climbing 1in. It takes him 30minutes to climb a 30in wall.
5-4=1 1x=30 x=30minutes

if snappy climbs 5 inches and slides back down 4 every min then he will climb an inch every minut so it wll take him 30 mins

If snappy the snail climbs five inches per minute and falls back down four inches then Snappy would be climbing one inch per minute. And if he climed a thirty inch wall then he would climb the wall in thirty minutes.

It would take the snail 30 minutes to climb the wall because he only gains one inch per minute therefore thirty minutes would equal thirty inches.

Snappy the snail is very slow!!! Every time he climbs 5 inches, he falls back 4 inches, only making an inch's progress every minute. At this rate, it would take poor Snappy 30 minutes to climb a 30-inch wall.

it would take 30 minutes for snappy to climb up the wall

it would take 30 minutes for snappy to climb up the wall

it would take snappy the snail 30 minutes to climb up the wall because he only climps 1 ince a minute

I have to admit it, I fell for this one like many of you. It will take Snappy 26 minutes to climb the wall. Yes, he goes up 5 then slides back 4 each minute (so one inch per minute, but when he is at 25 inches (25 minutes), then next 5 inches he goes up but won't slide back down because he is at the top!
